Depilation is a generic term for hair removal which affects the part of the hair above the surface of the skin. The most common form of depilation is shaving. Another popular option is the use of chemical depilatories, which work by breaking the disulfide bonds that link the protein chains that give hair its strength, making the hair disintegrate.

The Pros and Cons of Laser Hair Removal
By Mark Woodcock
In our western culture, it is considered attractive and preferable to have as little body hair as necessary. People will go to great lengths to remove their unwanted body hair, and spare no expense doing so. And methods of can seem downright torturous and barbaric. Shaving with a dangerously sharp blade, ripping hair out with hot wax, and now, blasting unwanted hair with lasers. Most people that want to get rid of unsightly or embarrassing body hair would prefer a method that will ensure that the hair will grow back very slowly, if at all. That is why laser is growing in popularity. It promises quick removal of hair from the root, and pledges that the hair will grow back at a very slow rate, and in some cases, not at all. If you are considering the procedure of laser hair removal, it is vital that you know the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure, as well as how to find a reputable and honest practitioner to perform the process on you
.

Laser works when a hand-held device is pressed onto the area of skin, and light beams at particular wavelengths are sent through the device. This light is aimed at the dark pigment in your hair, and is meant to cause damage to the hair follicles without damaging the surrounding tissue. There is a good chance that it will be painful, despite many claims by some laser professionals that it can be totally pain-free. Reputable establishments will employ several pain reduction techniques, including skin cooling with gels, sprays, water mist, or cool air. And because of the laser, wearing eye protection during the procedures is a good idea.
There are several advantages to having a laser procedure. One, of course, is the long-lasting removal of unwanted hair, or it's permanent reduction in appearance at the very least. In fact, if there is regrowth, it can come back lighter in color and less thick in texture. If performed correctly, the procedure is considered safe. If you have a large area on your body with more hair on it than you are comfortable with, such as your back, chest, or legs, laser is useful and beneficial. It is important to note that fairer skinned people with darker body hair usually get the best results with this procedure.

As with any procedure such as this, there are drawbacks as well. There is, unfortunately, no long-term evidence suggestive of laser hair removal's safety and real effectiveness. Also, because everybody is different, it is difficult to establish firm regrowth rates. It is established that the procedure does not work as effectively on gray, red, or blonde hairs, and it must be performed with care on those people with darker skin tones or on people who sunbathe. Further downsides include the occurrence of burns, abrasions, or skin discoloration. The procedure can be costly, too. And since some people do not react to the process, the decision to receive laser is one that requires great consideration of the factors involved.

It is important to be aware that there are many less-reputable businesses that claim that they can perform laser hair removal. Many of these so-called experts claim that their procedures are totally pain-free, that the is completely permanent, and they even go so far as to guarantee absolutely no hair regrowth. Because there is no legal regulation of who can buy these laser devices or regulation for training or quality control standards, there is a great risk for long-term physical injury and the loss of a great deal of your money. Even though some believe that making laser more widely available by not restricting the procedure to physicians only will make it more affordable, it is not worth the possible risks by patronizing someone who might not know what they are doing.

When shopping around for laser hair removal, make sure you choose a practitioner who will give you an in-office consultation. Ask lots of questions, including about pain relief, costs and fees, and post-treatment concerns. Write all of the information you gather down on paper. Make sure that the office is clean and organized. Talk to former customers, and ask them questions about the practioner's manner and service. Try to get a test area done before you make any commitments, and never commit to the procedure at the consultation meeting. By shopping around to different practitioners, you will be assured that you will get the best price and the best experience with your laser hair removal.
